The Iberian section of the BWN provides access to materials in the fields of literary studies, linguistics, and the history and art of Spain, Portugal, Latin America, and Portuguese-speaking Africa. The collection also includes textbooks for learning Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, Basque, and Galician.
Among our unique materials we have facsimiles of pre-Columbian codices. The section also boasts many valuable items from the book collections of Prof. Marie-Pierrette Małcużyńska and translator Zofia Szleyen. The Iberian collection comprises a total of approximately 30,000 books and numerous periodicals (mainly in Spanish and Portuguese, but also in Polish), as well as CDs and DVDs.
The beginnings of the collection date back to 1972. At that time, a library was established at the Department of Iberian Studies, which later functioned as the Library of the Institute of Iberian and Ibero-American Studies at the University of Warsaw, and then as the Library of Iberian, Italian, and French Studies at the University of Warsaw.
