Thanks to the Italian section of the Library, you can gain an in-depth understanding of the culture of the Italian-speaking world.
The Italian collection has been compiled since 1982. The book collection of the former Library of the Department of Italian Studies at the University of Warsaw consisted of a complete series of Italian literary classics (including Letteratura Italiana Laterza and Storia della Critica) along with study guide – donated by Prof. Mieczysław Brahmer, as well as valuable books from the 19th and early 20th centuries, donated by Prof. Rachmiel Brandwajn.
Over the past decade, the collection has expanded primarily with the latest academic publications and contemporary literature. It is dominated by Italian-language fiction, publications on literary studies and linguistics, as well as books on Italian history, Italian theatre, and commedia dell’arte (including as many as 125 works by Carlo Goldoni).
The section boasts a rich collection of gialli italiani, or Italian crime novels, by authors such as Andrea Camilleri, Marco Malvaldi, and Ilaria Tuti, as well as luxury editions of the Meridiani series. The latest acquisitions include Italian postcolonial literature. In total, the section holds approximately 13,000 volumes.
