Books
We have nearly 300,000 books in our collections. Information about them can be found in:
- the University of Warsaw Libraries Catalogue (we recommend narrowing your search results to Form and type: Książki (Books) and Location: BWN – Inst. Anglistyki, etc.);
- our card catalogue (more information).
Some books are available immediately in the room of the Circulation Desk and Reading Room. However, most of our books are stored in the closed stacks and must be ordered through the online catalogue (except for books that have not been catalogued electronically, which must be ordered at the Circulation Desk).
Access to books depends on the markings in the online catalogue.
If the book’s call number…
- is not followed by the phrase wolny dostęp (open stacks) or Czytelnia BWN / Czyt. BWN / CBWN (BWN Reading Room) = the book is most likely in one of our closed stacks – order it online, and then collect it at the Circulation Desk;
- is followed by the phrase wolny dostęp (open stacks) = the book is in the Reading Room and does not need to be ordered online – write down the call number, look for the book (check the shelves behind the neon sign first), browse it on site, or borrow it out of the BWN;
- is followed by the phrase Czytelnia BWN / Czyt. BWN / CBWN (BWN Reading Room) = the book is in the Reading Room and cannot be borrowed – write down the call number, look for the book, and browse it on site.
If the item policy is:
- Loanable = the book can be borrowed out of the BWN;
- Not loanable = the book can only be viewed in the BWN Reading Room.
Periodicals
We provide access to approximately one thousand periodical titles in print and online. Information about them can be found in:
- the University of Warsaw Libraries Catalogue (we recommend narrowing your search results to Form and type: Czasopisma (Journals) and Location: BWN – Inst. Anglistyki, etc.);
- our card catalogue (more information).
Some periodicals, especially the latest issues of the subscribed journals, are available immediately in the Reading Room. However, most of our periodicals are stored in the closed stacks and must be ordered through the online catalogue (except for periodicals that have not been catalogued electronically, which must be ordered at the Circulation Desk).
Most of the periodicals can be viewed only on site.
To order a periodical for the Reading Room, log in to your library account on the UW Libraries Catalogue, search for the selected title, and after entering the journal record, check whether the issue you are looking for is on the list titled Holdings. Then, click Request Issue (above the list). When placing your order, you must specify the year and issue number of the specific copy, and finally click SEND REQUEST.
Record library
We have over 2,000 CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays in our collections. Information about them can be found in:
- the University of Warsaw Libraries Catalogue (we recommend narrowing your search results to Form and type: e.g. Filmy i seriale (Movies and TV series) and Location: BWN – Inst. Anglistyki, etc.);
- the downloadable lists:
[The list for the German studies section is currently being prepared. The French studies and Italian studies sections do not collect discs].
All discs are stored in the closed stacks, so you must order them through the online catalogue or – if you cannot find the disc you are looking for – at the Circulation Desk.
Discs from the English studies and German studies sections are available for use on-site only (except for CDs accompanying books with the Item policy: Loanable). They can be played on our desktop computers and on headphones borrowed from us.
Discs from the Iberian studies and Finno-Ugric studies sections can be borrowed out of the BWN. Please return borrowed CDs and DVDs only to the Circulation Desk, not to the drop box.
